| There were several possible candidates with the surname Clarke and the team listing did not provide a club just “Country League, WA” The most likely candidate is Francis Denis John Clark WX7714 of the 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion. Francis (AKA Frank) played in the 2/4th MG Battalion football team. Frank was also living in Karridale when he enlisted and noted as playing for Karridale pre war with Cliff Spackman Not Francis Brian Clarke who played 76 Games for East Fremantle before and after the war. He was in the RAAF and not in Changi Possible CLARKE ALAN : Service Number – WX6201 : Date of birth – 28 Apr 1918 : Place of birth – KALGOORLIE WA : Place of enlistment – CLAREMONT WA : Next of Kin – CLARKE WILLIAM (Was POW in Malaya). But without any further identification or connection to the Changi football game this can only be considered “possible” and with Francis Denis Clark playing with Cliff Spakman and in the 2/4th MGB Football team Alan Clark would be a less likely match. There was an E J CLarke in the 2/4th Machine Gun Regiment but he was born in 1902 and would have been over 41 years when the Changi game was played so unlikely to be taking the field. He also had only arrived in Australia from England aged 18 so would he have become and Australian Rules footballer? |
