Difficult to confirm this player. Wembley Football Club was very successful winning premierships in 1935, 36, 37, 38, 39 and 40. They have team photos for each premiership and there is no “Williams” listed in any of these teams. While not conclusive, it casts some doubt on the attribution of the club. If Williams was a good enough player to make the Rest of Australia team would he not have played in at least one of the premierships won by Wembley between 1935 and 1940? “The Changi Brownlow” by Roland Perry links Williams to the 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion. Reviewing the soldiers of the 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion with the surname Williams (With thanks to the Unit Association’s excellent website) identifies two primary candidates. George David Williams or Robert Edgar Williams. Others with the Williams surname were either not in Changi or had medical issues that made them unlikely candidates to be playing in the Rest of Australia football team. Ralph Thomas Williams was noted as a hockey player rather than a footballer so also an unlikely candidate. Robert Edgar Williams was was sent away with A Force from Changi in May 1942 (as per National Archives record) so could not be playing in Jan 1943. So George David Williams emerges as the probable candidate for this spot. However this may change if more information emerges. George David Williams was active in campaigning for former POW’s after the war but no mention of football More work required to confirm this player. |
